Addiction Recover Services
Individualized care with treatment planning designed to meet each patient's specific needs
Alcohol and other drug dependencies are treatable diseases. The staff at Swedish Medical Center's
Addiction Recovery Services knows that with the right help, dependent persons can learn to abstain from
mood-altering chemicals.
Swedish's staff understands that recovery from chemical dependency is best accomplished through an
ongoing course of structured treatment. As a result, the initial treatment phase is designed to disrupt the
addiction and stabilize the person in abstinence. Treatment then continues in an organized fashion until
recovery can be maintained with the help of community-based, self-help support groups.
Staff
Addiction Recovery Services' multi disciplinary team includes physicians who specialize in addiction
medicine, as well as specially trained nurses and state-certified chemical-dependency counselors.
Psychologists - experienced at treating chemical dependencies -- are also available for consultations.
Preadmission Assessment
Addiction Recovery Services develops customized treatment plans for each patient.
This process begins during the preadmission evaluation. An interview is conducted with the patient,
which includes input from the referring health-care professional, to assess the nature of the dependency
Concerned family members and friends are often invited to attend this interview. During the interview, a
preliminary treatment plan and an initial level of care are determined. This is a free service.
Evaluation and Diagnosis
Once admitted, an extensive evaluation of the patient's involvement with alcohol and/ or other drugs is
completed by a certified chemical-dependency counselor. This evaluation examines the addiction's
effect on the patient's physical and emotional health, relationships, employment, personal values and
legal responsibilities.
A complete medical examination and reports from other health-care professionals are included when
appropriate.
T'he recommended course of treatment is then modified via ongoing assessments conducted throughout
the treatment process.
Detoxification
When necessary, a safe, supervised withdrawal from the toxic
effects of alcohol or other drugs is the first step. Detoxification
services are provided by an experienced team of physicians,
nurses and counselors who are backed by the comprehensive
services of the state's largest medical center.
Stabilization and Rehabilitation (Inpatient)
During his or her stay, the patient receives medical attention,
education, group therapy and individual counseling. Participants
are introduced to support groups, as well as exercise, relaxation
and other skills needed to maintain sobriety. A detailed plan for
the patient's ongoing care is also developed. The length of a
patient's stay varies depending on their individual needs.
Day Treatment
Day treatment is an option for those who need an intensive
program but do not need 24-hour medical care. These services
are similar to inpatient care except participants go home each
evening, rather than stay overnight at the medical center.
Intensive Outpatient Treatment
Many patients are able to enter intensive treatment on an
outpatient basis, allowing them to continue working and
performing most day-to-day activities. This service includes
education, group therapy and individual counseling. As patients
demonstrate recovery skills, they progress to less-intense levels
of outpatient care before entering the
Individual Treatment Plans
Patient needs are continually evaluated during the course of
treatment. Each patient's customized care may involve different
combinations of inpatient and outpatient services. For example, a
short inpatient stay could be combined with an intensive outpatient
program. Program schedules are arranged so the continuity of
treatment is not disrupted.
Support Groups
Patients attend Twelve Step (e.g., Alcoholics Anonymous) and
other support-group meetings during treatment. After completing
treatment, patients are encouraged to attend free, informal group
discussions -- alumni meetings -- held at the medical center each
week. Former patients and family members are also welcome to
attend any of the self-help support groups, which meet weekly at
Swedish Medical Center/Ballard.
Family Participation
We believe recovery is best served when families are involved in
the treatment process. Family members are encouraged to attend
Addiction Recovery Services' family education program and Al-
Anon meetings in their communities (see our Family Services
brochure).
Financial Arrangements
Chemical-dependency treatment is covered by most health-insurance plans and Medicare. The medical center's financial counselors can help determine eligibility for coverage and answer other payment questions.
