Bone Density Screening for Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis, thinning of the bone, is the most common health problem after menopause, and is also the third leading cause of death in women after age 60. The average woman has lost about one-third of her hip bone by menopause, but this "silent thief" is not just an older woman's disease. We see an epidemic of bone loss among younger women, particularly those who over-exercise, drink too much alcohol, coffee, or soda, or have too little calcium intake. You can not tell by looking at the outside of your body what your bone condition is inside! Older women need to be particularly aware of bone loss as this problem progresses as you age.

In our office we can provide you with an effective, accurate bone density test using the Sahara bone density testing system. It uses save sound wave technology to determine the bone density at your ankle and it is closely correlated with your bone density at the hip and lower back where many problems present themselves.

We advise women to consider having a baseline bone density test done at least by age 35, just as you do with your mammogram. Testing should be done regularly when menopausal age is reached. This testing helps detect early bone loss and allows us to plan NOW to prevent bone thining that leads to increased fractures, disability, chronic pain and early death. Many insurance companies cover this test. Call our office (206-386-3600) for an appointment to have this important preventive testing performed. It only takes minutes but can detect early bone loss and help you prevent future bone problems.
